Yesterday I mentioned my GF went ahead with the purchase of a new 2020 Elantra GT:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
So after fees and taxes with no negotiation, this car should cost around CAD$27,000.
And she told me she managed to negotiate the price down to $26K... which sounded great.
But later, she told me that the total out-the-door price of around CAD$30,000.
While she negotiated the price down to $26K supposedly, they got her on selling her an unnecessary extended warranty and the “Leather” (which is actually simulated leather... AKA vinyl).
At least she didn’t pay $250 for “filling the tires with nitrogen” and another $250 for the “etching”.... or at least I hope not.
I wish I had been there for the purchase.
She made the same mistake I’ve read other people make... not looking at the *complete* price and getting suckered into buying overpriced extended warranties and paying too much for faux-leather.
The fact that the kept pushing the nitrogen air for the tires for $250 and that stupid ‘etching’ for another $250 really pisses me off.
And it just confirms that the dealer stereotypes continue to be true.
You won’t ever see Tesla pushing BS nitrogen or etching fees as part of their sales strategy.

As a former car salesman (GMC/Buick), this is unfortunately how salesman get their money nowadays. With dealerships going away from commission based pay, they only way to pad the paycheck is with accessories and warranties.
I was really damn good at selling these, and could even convince some “car people” it was a good idea to have them (and sometimes it was!).
But yeah, it’s a shit practice, and the loser is the consumer.
We always had money taken out of our paychecks for “buybacks” which is when people cancelled their accessories or warranties early, or right away. I’d check into it right away to see if you can reverse it!

The Kia dealer where I bought the Forte did this shit too.

You’re in Canada? I hope she at least got the GT in orange (a color we don’t get down here)
Up until last y ear, you could even get a manual GT with a big sunroof for only 22k in Canadian dollars (a combo never available in the US).
The cheapest GT with a sunroof down here is 27k in US dollars
And yes, that’s why people put with Tesla’s poor uild quality and Elon Musks’s antics: no dealers!

“I’d check into it right away to see if you can reverse it!”
I spoke to her about it last night and I’m pretty sure she won’t.
But I’m not going to get too worked up about it. I
t’s not my money. I gave my GF my advice. She took some of it, but not all of it.
She’s an adult with her own money and can make her own decisions... including living with the consequences of those decisions.
At least she didn’t end up in some crappy CUV... which is what some idiots were trying to convince her to get.

I am SO happy I dont have the option for that stuff as a bike sales guy. SO happy.

“You’re in Canada?”
Yes
“I hope she at least got the GT in orange (a color we don’t get down here)“
Nope. While I personally would have picked that colour, she wanted either black or white. At least I convinced her white was a better choice than black since it looks clean for longer.
“Up until last year, you could even get a manual GT with a big sunroof for only 22k in Canadian dollars (a combo never available in the US).”
And that combo is still available up here.
“And yes, that’s why people put with Tesla’s poor uild quality and Elon Musks’s antics:”
On the Teslas I saw, the build quality looked fine. Tesla’s build quality is no worse than modern GM or modern Ford.
I’ve seen truly horrid build quality... like a lot of the garbage GM was selling in the 1980s.
And it’s not just the lack of dealer antics, the vehicles themselves are fantastic. Of the new cars we tested, I would have gone with the Tesla for myself even though it was the most expensive even after the government rebate.
HOWEVER... over 15 years of ownership factoring ALL costs, the only thing cheaper than a base Tesla Model 3 SR+ would be a Prius.
And it doesn’t hurt that the Model 3 SR+ had the best performance and best fuel economy of the bunch as well.

Yeah, Tesla just overcharges you upfront ;)
Anyways, that totally sucks. Dealers can be such slimeballs. Too bad you weren’t there. The dealer that sold me my wife’s CX-5 was actually pretty great to work with, but they did try to sell me $7200 worth of “protection” or various types. I told them to piss off, and thankfully they did not try a hard sell on me.

The problem with Tesla’s build quality being no worse than a GM or Ford is that your average Tesla costs 3-4x as much as your average GM or Ford. Tesla needs to be matching the build quality of the big German brands and they just aren’t.

I LOATHE Tesla interiors. I am sure they are comfortable, but I hate the SUPER-ULTRA minimalist styling...
...that coming from a guy that likes base-model Korean econoboxes. But their interiors just seem TOO bland and I can’t stand the ‘giant iPad in the middle of the dash’ look and everything being controlled by touchscreens. If they had a proper interior with buttons, I’d even consider one...

Stuff like this is why I prefer to buy used....cheaper, but also not as pushy and less sales gimmicks :(

I bought a new Mazda MX -5 RF (Miata) for my wife in January, and I made it very clear what the rules of engagement were. If they tried to fuck with me in any way at all, I would walk. They listened. No games and the deal was done quickly (being a cash buyer takes the bullshit out pretty quickly too).

Yeah, I never jerked people around if it wasn’t worth it. I think I’m pretty good at reading people, so it was fairly easy to know when (and when not) to push.
Being a cash buyer a lso means they want you out the door as soon as possible. Salesman don’t make any “back end” from cash deals.

I work in sales, albeit quite different as I’m involved with microprocessors targeted to cloud computing/datacenters. My job is 100% engineering in nature but people skills still matter. I do not play games in any way, I service my customers .

Then you would make less money then your coworkers selling cars.
Th ere’s a reason I don’t do it anymore, and I have stories that would make people’s skin crawl from the experience. Not excusing or condoning it, just stating facts.

I like Tesla’s minimalist interiors.
But I think another company could do well by making vehicles similar to what Tesla offers with more “traditional luxurious” interiors
![]() 06/19/2020 at 14:27 |
|
I don’t even care if they are luxurious....I just want actual controls I don’t have to look at with tactile feedback rather than a giant touchscreen I have to look at while driving.

Teslas have controls... Have a look:
Two controls on the steering wheel and two stalks!
That’s not good enough for you ???
:-p

I’ve heard plenty, and I don’t think I could bring myself to sell cars so I’m not too concern ed about it. Not to mention you make one helluva lot more money working in tech witho ut having to do the sleaze thing.

“your average Tesla costs 3-4x as much as your average GM or Ford.”
The “average Ford” these days is the F150... which I’d say costs at least as much as a Model 3 SR+... but often more.
If we just restrict ourselves to cars, the only thing Ford has at the moment is the Fusion... which has an out-the-door price of at least CAD
$30,000... that’s the one with the 1.5L 3 cyl engine
The Tesla Model 3 SR+has an out-the-door price of about CAD$54,000.
And the base 3 has vastly better performance than the base model Fusion.
And it’s not even close to being 2x the cost.
And it’s a similar story with the Chevy Malibu.
Or if you compare the Bolt, the cheapest Bolt has an out-the-door price of about $53,000... except the Bolt
is inferior in every way...
As for matching the build quality of the big German brands... LOL... they’re NOT the benchmark for quality
. Tesla’s quality is at least as good as the big German brands.
If Tesla is to strive to be truly top quality, they should be using Lexus as a benchmark.

It is not :P
Also I thought I’d read somewhere people have issues with those rolly ball steering wheel buttons a lot? Or at least they used to.

Have you forgotten that I’m a gay female retard Tesla fanboy???
In the morning, you shall find your coffee maker AND your backup coffee maker GONE.
But all will not be lost. Here’s a cup of blood for you:

You monster! You better be careful, you mess with my wife’s coffee, and she will end you boi!
I took some hits in that diesel one too, for agreeing with you. Some really juicy stuff. I think I still have some screen shots of some of the garbage they replied to me. It was the most vitriolic stuff I’ve ever experienced on Kinja.
One thing you’ve gotta love about the greys. They have called me a Trump loving goose stepping Nazi racist fascist AND a gay homosexual Prius driving libtard. So, I must be doing something right.
